Essay On Corporate Finance - 806 Words

Corporate Finance in the age of Thinking Computers. Just like humans, computers can now learn and adapt, thanks to machine learning, a subfield in AI. With artificial neural networks to mimic those of the human brain, intelligent computers can learn from examples, meaning that no task specific programming is required. While machine learning technology is still at infant stages in most industries, it is making ground breaking milestones in the financial sector. Among the areas experiencing major transformations is corporate finance. AI, in general, has been proliferating in the financial sector, with a study by Oxford Economics showing high reception among financial executives. The study, which involved 1500 financial executives†¦show more content†¦With the high volatility in todays global economy and regulatory environment, financial executives need to move beyond the traditional annual budget cycle if they are to make well-informed decisions. Machine Learning has ensured this by making it possible to analyze huge chunks of data within split second, learn from it, and provide highly accurate real time information for decision making. Brown also notes that AI relies on live, integrated business data and therefore financial managers can leverage of information from other departments in a firm when making decisions. For instance, through the technology, financial managers can monitor how consumers are responding to a new product and update projections correspondingly. Similarly, the financial team can take advantage of the data from the human resource to identify compensation strategies that ensure employee retention and reduces turnover. In other words, automation through AI enables CFOs and other financial managers to get data insights from marketing, human resource, supply chain, and RD, for better financial decision making. Even better is the fact that through machine learning, the financial systems in a firm keep improving themselves to accommodate even the tiniest changes in data. AI and machine learning also have a significant role to play in helping companies meet regulatory and compliance requirements at a lower cost. Superconductors Essay Example For Students

Superconductors Essay A superconductor is an element or compound that will conduct electricity without resistance below a cretin temperature. The phenomenon was discovered in 1911 by Kamerlingh Onnes, who found that the resistance of mercury dropped suddenly to zero at a temperature of about 4.2K. For the next 75 years there followed a rather steady string of announcements of new materials that become superconducting near absolute zero. A major breakthrough occurred in 1986 when Karl Alexander Mller and J. Georg Bednorz announced that they had discovered a new class of copper-oxide materials that become superconducting at temperatures exceeding 70K. The work of Mller and Bednorz, which earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1987, precipitated a host of discoveries of other high-temperature superconductors that exhibit lossless electrical flow at temperatures up to 125K. Classical superconductivity (superconductivity at temperatures near absolute zero) is displayed by some metals, including zinc, magnes ium, lead, gray tin, aluminum, mercury, and cadmium. Other metals, such as molybdenum, may exhibit superconductivity after high purification. Alloys (e.g., two parts of gold to one part of bismuth) and such compounds as tungsten carbide and lead sulfide may also be superconductors. Thin films of normal metals and superconductors that are brought into contact can form superconductive electronic devices, which replace transistors in some applications. An interesting aspect of the phenomenon is the continued flow of current in a superconducting circuit after the source of current has been shut off: for example, if a lead ring is immersed in liquid helium, an electric current that is induced magnetically will continue to flow after the removal of the magnetic field. Powerful electromagnets, which, once energized, retain magnetism virtually indefinitely, have been developed using several superconductors. The 1972 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to J. Bardeen, L. Cooper, and S. Schrief fer for their theory (known as the BCS theory) of classical superconductors. This quantum mechanical theory proposes that at very low temperatures electrons in an electric current move in pairs. Such pairing enables them to move through a crystal lattice without having their motion disrupted by collisions with the lattice. Several theories of high-temperature superconductors have been proposed, but none has been experimentally confirmed. Magnetic levitation is an application where superconductors perform extremely well. Transport vehicles such as trains can be made to float on strong superconducting magnets, virtually eliminating friction between the train and its tracks. Not only would conventional electromagnets waste much of the electrical energy as heat, they would have to be physically much larger than superconducting magnets. A landmark for the commercial use of MAGLEV technology occurred in 1990 when it gained the status of a nationally funded project in Japan. The Minister of Transport authorized construction of the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line, which opened on April 3, 1997. Two years later on April 14, 1999, the MLX01 test vehicle attained an incredible speed of 343 miles per hour. Although the technology has now been proven, the wider use of MAGLEV vehicles has been constrained by political and environmental concerns. The worlds only MAGLEV train to be adopted into commercial service, a shuttle in Birmingham, England, shut down in 1997 after operating for 11 years. Meanwhile, the U.S. government has earmarked nearly a billion dollars to build a MAGLEV train at one of seven proposed sites. And Germanys commercial MAGLEV is expected to become operational in 2006. An area where superconductors can perform a life-saving function is in the field of biomagnetism. Doctors need a non-invasive means of determining whats going on inside the human body. By impinging a strong superconductor-derived magnetic field into the body, hydrogen atoms that exist in the bodys water and fat molecules are forced to accept energy from the magnetic field. They then release this energy at a frequency that can be detected and displayed graphically by a computer. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was actually discovered in the mid 1940s. But, has only recently become an indispensable medical tool with the development of powerful computers to quickly process the large volume of data that is generated. THE MAIN ASPECTS OF ESTABLISHING A STEM CELL LABORATORY Essay Example For Students

THE MAIN ASPECTS OF ESTABLISHING A STEM CELL LABORATORY Essay THE MAIN ASPECTS OF ESTABLISHING A STEM CELL LABORATORY Human root cells are alone as they undergo self reclamation and distinction to go specialised cells one time given the right signals. The promise of root cell research in understanding the cell biological science, regenerative medical specialty and as drug showing has made this research an exciting country to research. Hence, despite its ethical issues, root cells are continuously being studied by set uping more root cell research labs. However, to bring forth robust, consistent and dependable informations, several of import facets must be reviewed and can be done by sing established research labs and acquiring penetrations from experient users. This is to guarantee the efficiency and effectivity of the civilization and experimentation and to forestall waste ( Inamdar et al. , 2012 ) . The undermentioned treatments are depicting about the basic human embryologic root cell ( hESC ) academic research lab with the concluding stuff is non intended for human application and with engagemen t of animate being in vivo surveies. We will write a custom essay on THE MAIN ASPECTS OF ESTABLISHING A STEM CELL LABORATORY specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There are two chief facets to be considered in set uping a root cell research lab which can be categorized into administrative program and physical program. Administrative program involves set uping protocols, seeking blessings, coverage and certification and meanwhile physical program involves planing and layout of the research lab, equipment and forces ( Wesselschmidt A ; Schwartz, 2013 ) . Stem cells derived from human embryos are confronting with ethical issues hence permissions and blessings must be granted before get downing the research. In the United Kingdom, there is a system called Integrated Research Application System ( IRAS ) to seek relevant blessings from HFEA, Research Ethic Committee ( REC ) , and NHS A ; R A ; D Office in a individual application procedure as shown in Table 1. As there will be carnal in vivo surveies, the surveies must be conducted under license from Home Office. Documentation including developing protocols is of import to be recorded in laborato ry note books. Protocols can be deviated from standard processs and the version of a protocol is used must be mentioned so that the best proficient processs or the consequence of altering processs can be traced. If any legal struggle arises, laboratory note books are acceptable groundss which maintaining records of all original work and neglect to make so can even do abjuration of publications. It is helpful to document the processs in organized and structured mode such as typical processs shown in Table 2. In fact, this good scientific pattern promotes efficient usage of research resources ( Inamdar, et al. , 2012 ) . Regulator Description HFEA The independent regulator for IVF intervention and embryo research To supply information to the public and policy shapers about the research To licence and supervise human embryologic research Regulates the storage of embryos REC To safeguard the rights, self-respect and public assistance of people involved in the wellness research Laboratory research that uses embryologic cell line ( s ) requires REC Favourable Opinion NHS A ; R A ; D Office An extra to ethical blessing Must acquire the permission before the surveies start To claim insurance/indemnity Table 1.Regulators to seek for permissions and blessings related to human embryologic root cells in the United Kingdom. Adapted from UK Stem Cell Tool Kit hypertext transfer protocol: //www.sc-toolkit.ac.uk/regulatoryroutes.cfm Documentation Reception of cell lines Passaging root cells Preparation of cultural media Preparation of feeder cells Preparation of root cell lines for analysis Cryopreservation of root cell lines in liquid N shop Dissolving root cell lines from liquid N shop Table 2.Some of specified documented protocols in the root cell civilization research lab. Modified from ( Inamdar, 2012 ) . The range of work such as the Numberss and types of cell lines to be cultured and the figure of people will work in the research lab with their assigned undertakings must be clearly defined. Besides that, care of the root cell lines and their word picture should be taken into history. If there is more than one cell lines are cultured at the same time, the precautions to forestall cross-contamination must be taken. The manner new cell lines are being introduced, how are they traveling to be kept or quarantined ( storage ) for long usage, the care, the proper disposal of waste should be questioned and answered clearly. Basically the root cell research lab is non much different from the other cell civilization laboratories despites some extra particular techniques because of the singularity of the root cells behaviour ( Wesselschmidt A ; Schwartz, 2013 ) . .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 , .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .postImageUrl , .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 , .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14:hover , .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14:visited , .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14:active { border:0!important; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14:active , .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14 .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u486fa3713d50b56ac721320859a0ee14:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Arctic EssayPhysical Plan Preplanning of research lab design and layout foremost and foremost must be based on the budget. This is to guarantee long term cost and uninterrupted support in keeping the root cell civilizations. ( Wesselschmidt A ; Schwartz, 2013 ) . The primary consideration in planing the cell civilization research lab is to supply the ambiance that does non pollute the cells and the people around. Thus, in the instance of redesigning the research lab, the location and its anterior usage must be checked to avoid any possible taints ( Inamdar et al. , 2012 ) . Lab Design Thin rule can be introduced to cut down work travel around research lab and cross-contamination ( Griffiths et al. , n.d. ) . The layout of research lab as shown in Figure 1 is designed to suit six chief indispensable demands which are unfertile handling, readying, incubation, wash-up, sterilisation and storage every bit described in Table 3. The readying country supposed to be following to wash-up and sterilization countries meanwhile the sterile working country is accessible to the storage and brooders ( Freshney, 1994 ) . The supply of liquid N and CO2is needed in cell civilization research lab, therefore their installing and handling must be given serious attending. The gases must be filtered from bugs, firmly fixed, and its location must be far from cell civilization work to avoid taint during replacing. The full cognition about equipment is necessary to guarantee its right map. The research lab should hold a dependable electric supply with the proviso of uninterrupted power supply ( UPS ) for indispensable equipments in cell civilization processs such as category II cabinets, air filter and brooders ( Inamdar et al. , 2012 ) . Lab Operation The nucleus of root cell research lab operation is requirement for regular cleansing by its well-trained staff and rigorous monitoring processs by a nominative member. Appropriate airing must be provided to avoid possible beginnings of moistness or fungous growing. As the lab do non hold a â€Å"clean room† , it can utilize a high quality air conditioner and dehumidifiers together with hygienic patterns such as the usage of laminar flow goon, disposable points, clean gloved custodies and germicide with 70 % isopropyl alcohol in H2O ( Inamdar et al. , 2012 ) . Facilities or Equipments Considerations Sterile country Clean, quiet and no through traffic. Separate from carnal house and microbiological research labs. Besides that, in order to guarantee their pluripotency, several checks can be done routinely such as look intoing for antibody markers through immunofluorescent staining or quantitative PCR and observation of cell morphology. The gilded criterion to guarantee pluripotency is through formation of teratoma tumour in immune-deficient mouse by transfering a hESC cell line ( Lyons et al. , 2007 ) . Skilled Forces Staff must be competent to carry through their responsibilities efficaciously therefore they must be equipped with necessary preparations such as in managing research lab safety and equipments, sterile techniques, cell banking, word picture of cell lines and their safety testing, quality control and record direction ( Inamdar et al. , 2012 ) . The cognition of methods to maintain the hESC in uniform cells is important. For the clip being mechanization is non necessary in root cell civilization as it requires eyes to passage the cells and to find their feeder is subjective. Concavenator - Facts and Figures

Concavenator - Facts and Figures Name: Concavenator (Greek for Cuenca hunter); pronounced con-CAV-eh-nate-or Habitat: Woodlands of western Europe Historical Period: Early Cretaceous (130 million years ago) Size and Weight: About 20 feet long and 2-3 tons Diet: Meat Distinguishing Characteristics: Triangular hump on lower back; possible feathers on forearms About Concavenator Discovering a new genus of dinosaur is rare enough, but discovering a new genus of dinosaur possessing a never-before-seen anatomical feature is a once-in-a-lifetime event. So imagine the wonderment of the Spanish team of researchers that recently dug up Concavenator, a large theropod of early Cretaceous Europe that sported not one, but two, extremely odd adaptations: first, a triangular structure on its lower back, just above the hips, that may have supported a sail or fatty hump; and second, what appear to be quill knobs on its forearms, that is, bony structures that probably supported small arrays of feathers. So what accounts for these strange features? Well, the 20-foot-long Concavenator was a close relative of Carcharodontosaurus, which was itself related to the huge, sail-backed Spinosaurusso the hump/sail on this new dinosaur shouldnt come as a surprise, even though it was situated much further down the spinal column than on other dinosaurs (another surprise: until recently, these types of theropods were thought to be restricted to South America and Africa). As for the quill knobs, those are more of a mystery: to date, only much smaller theropods than Concavenator, mostly dino-birds and raptors, have shown evidence of arm feathers. Clearly, the feathers on Concavenators forearms (and probably only on its forearms) were meant for display rather than insulation, which may provide clues about the subsequent evolution of feathered flight.

What Are the US Military Colleges Should You Go

What Are the US Military Colleges Should You Go SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips For those students who aspire to get military training and earn a college degree, there are a number of colleges in the United States that are designed for you to pursue your military and educational goals simultaneously. There are three primary types of US military colleges: service academies, Senior Military Colleges, and Military Junior Colleges. In this article, I'll describe each type of military college and explain the differences between them. Furthermore, I'll help you determine which type of college may be best for you. What Are US Military Colleges? Military colleges offer a combination of military instruction and higher education. Attending a military college can giveyou the opportunity to get a college education and a military job after getting your degree; some military colleges even require you to serve in the military after graduation. As I mentioned above, military colleges can be separated into service academies, Senior Military Colleges, and Military Junior Colleges. The 5 US Service Academies The service academies are a great option for students who know they want to pursue a college education and serve in the military. There are five Service Academies, each dedicated to a different branch of the armed services: US Military Academy(West Point, NY) US Naval Academy(Annapolis, MD) US Air Force Academy (Colorado Springs, CO) US Coast Guard Academy(New London, CT) US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, NY) Graduates of the service academies receive a Bachelor of Science, are commissioned as officers in their branch, and are required to serve for a minimum of five years after graduation. Getting In to the Service Academies The service academies are very selective schools, and all of the academies, except the Coast Guard, require a congressional letter of recommendation to gain admission. Students also have to submittypical requirements ofa college application (application, transcript, test scores, recommendations, and college essay), applicants to the service academies have to pass a medical exam and take a fitness assessment. The Air Force Academy and Naval Academy require interviews as well. You’ll primarily be evaluated on your high school academic performance, test scores, and extracurricular achievement. The service academies are fond of students who have pursued leadership positions and shown a commitment to their communities. Also, they appreciate students who have excelled athletically and have obtained awards and leadership positions on their sports teams. Cost Financially, the service academies are undoubtedly an incredible deal. Tuition, books, board, medical, and dental care are fully paid for all four years. Additionally, you receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses and pay for miscellaneous supplies. Service Academy Life In many respects, life for students at each of the military academies is very similar. The academies are known for being extremely strict, conservative, and requiring a great deal of discipline. Underclassmen, especially, have very little freedom. They're rarely allowed to leave campus, and there are harsh rules and punishments regarding drinking and drug use. Typically, service academy students have mandatory activities from around 6:00 AM-8:00 PM. Then, they start studying and doing homework. Furthermore, they only get a few weeks of summer vacation as opposed to the three months students get at regular colleges. Service academy students don’t get much freedom or free time, but they tend to get a great education, a unique bonding experience with their peers, and many future opportunities. In fact, Navy, Army, and Air Force placed in the top 15 of Payscale's best universities and colleges by salary potential. The academies also emphasize athletics. Students have to participate in varsity or intramural sports, and students are required to attend home football games. The major differences between the academies arerelated to their locations and the respective branches they’re preparing you to serve in. Also, Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine Academy are much smaller than the other three academies. Now, I’ll provide an overview of each of the academies to give you an idea of what makes each one unique and what you’ll have to do to get admitted. As part of each description,I summarized student reviews that come from Niche, a website that ranks and reviews schools. Army commencement (The U.S. Army/Flickr) US Military Academy Also known as Army or West Point, the US Military Academy was founded in 1802 and trains cadets to become Army officers. It’s located in West Point, NY, which is about 50 miles from New York City. Fast Facts Location: West Point, NY Undergraduate enrollment: 4,389 Acceptance rate: 9% Average GPA: 3.74 Average SAT: 1272 Average ACT: 29 US News ranking: #12 National Liberal Arts Colleges Student Perspectives Students acknowledge that life for cadets is extremely stressful and busy, but many are grateful for their student experiences and that they're getting superb training for military careers. Also, they're appreciative of the friendships they've made during their time at West Point. On the negative side, some lament their decision to go there because of the lack of freedom and draconian rules. US Naval Academy US Naval Academy students are trained to become officers in the Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are on active duty in the US Navy. The Academy is located in Annapolis, MD, where the Severn River flows into the ChesapeakeBay. It’s about an hour from Washington, DC. Fast Facts Location: Annapolis, MD Undergraduate enrollment: 4,526 Acceptance rate: 8% Average GPA: 3.86 Average SAT: 1360 Average ACT: 29 US News ranking: #21 National Liberal Arts Colleges Student Perspectives Many Naval Academy students enjoy the challenges that service academy life poses and the education they receive at Navy. They also tout the bonds they form with their peers, and they're grateful for the financial benefits and summer trainingthey have an opportunity to receive. However, some believe that the monotony and rigor of daily life can extinguish their passions and wear them down. It's a Naval Academy wedding. (Lawrence OP/Flickr) US Air Force Academy The Air Force Academy trains cadets to become officers in the Air Force. The Academy is located in Colorado Springs, CO. Fast Facts Location: Colorado Springs, CO Undergraduate enrollment: 4,237 Acceptance rate: 12% Average GPA: 3.83 Average SAT: 1314 Average ACT: 30 US News ranking: #26 National Liberal Arts Colleges Student Perspectives The students comment on the harsh rules and how it can be hard to adjust to the challenges if you're not from a military background. Many appreciate the bonds they've made and their teachers, but they seem to be looking forward more to the advantages they'll get as graduates of Air Force than enjoying their time there. US Coast Guard Academy The Coast Guard is the smallest of the service academies. Graduates become officers in the Coast Guard. It’s located in New London, CT, which is about two hours from Boston and New York City. Fast Facts Location: New London, CT Undergraduate enrollment: 988 Acceptance rate: 16% Average GPA: 3.92 Average SAT: 1882 Average ACT: 28 US News ranking: #2 Regional Colleges (North) Student Perspectives Students believe it's hard to fulfill all of their obligations and try to have a social life. However, they appreciate the education and future opportunities they're being given. Furthermore, they're complimentary of their teachers. Coast Guard fun (US Coast Guard Academy/Flickr) US Merchant Marine Academy The US Merchant Marine Academy graduates licensed Merchant Marine Officers. The Merchant Marine is a fleet of ships that carries imports and exports during peacetime, and it becomes a naval auxiliary during times of war. The Academy is located in Kings Point, NY, about 20 miles east of New York City. Fast Facts Location: Kings Point, NY Undergraduate enrollment: 923 Acceptance rate: 15% Average GPA: 3.6 Average SAT: 1268 Average ACT: 28 US News ranking: #3 Regional Colleges (North) Student Perspectives Again, students here acknowledge the rigors of service academy life. They accept that they have more responsibilities and are busier than regular college students. One unique component of the Merchant Marine Academy that students praised is Sea Year, which is a program during their sophomore and junior years when they train on vessels and get to travel the world. Senior Military Colleges Senior military colleges give students the option to pursue military training while they’re in college. There are six military colleges: Texas AM Norwich University Virginia Military Institute The Citadel Virginia Tech University of North Georgia Additionally, the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership at Mary Baldwin College has an affiliated program. At The Citadel and Virginia Military Institute, all students must become cadets, which means they’re part of the military training program. At the other colleges, students can be regular civilian students or join the Corps of Cadets. Those who become cadets have a similar schedule and experience as students at the service academies. They have to keep to a strict schedule, have similar rules, and must undergo physical and military training. Every cadet must enter the Corps of Cadets and the Reserve Officer Training Corps. At SMCs, cadets live in their own dorms and by a different set of rules, whichROTC students at traditional four-year colleges aren't subject to. Unlike the service academies, at Senior Military Colleges, there is no service requirement after graduation unless you receive an ROTC scholarship. Members of the Texas AM Corps of Cadets get to rock these boots. (bk1bennett/Flickr) Getting Into Senior Military Colleges Generally, when applying to SMCs, you have to submit an application, personal essay, transcript, and standardized test scores. You’ll be evaluated on your academic performance and extracurricular achievements. The selectivity of the SMCs varies, but generally, if you meet their average GPA and standardized test scores, you have a good chance of getting accepted. Virginia Tech has an average GPA of 3.66, an average ACT score of 27, and accepts 70% of applicants. The Citadel has an average GPA of 3.5, an average ACT score of 23, and accepts 80% of applicants. SMCs that give you the option whether or not to join the Corps of Cadets have different application procedures. At Texas AM, you have to be accepted to the university as a regular student before you join the Corps of Cadets. At Virginia Tech, you indicate on your application if you’re intending to join the Corps. However, if you end up deciding not to join after stating your intention to do so, your application will be reevaluated. Cost Also, a big difference between the service academies and senior military colleges is that you don’t receive the financial benefits of the academies or get a full-ride scholarship for attending an SMC. For the 2017-2018 school year, The University of North Georgia was roughly $20,000 annually for cadets. At Virginia Tech, the cost for in-state students was also about $23,000, but it was about $40,000 for out-of-state students. However, there are grants and ROTC scholarships available to cadets. Additionally, you can apply for need-based financial aid. Military Junior Colleges Military Junior Colleges are two-year colleges that allow cadets to become commissioned officers in the Army Reserves through the Early Commissioning Program after finishing the program. At the completion of the program, students will also receive an associate degree. The students must still go on to get a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college to serve as a regular officer in active duty. However, while students are getting their four-year degrees, they can serve as reserve officers to help advance their military careers. Some Military Junior Colleges offer other programs in addition to the Early Commissioning Program like the Service Academy Preparation Program, which offers students one year of preparation to transfer to a service academy. Other schools will offer two years of a cadet/ROTC program independent of an Early Commissioning Program. There are five Military Junior Colleges in the US: Wentworth Military Academy Valley Forge Military Academy and College Marion Military Institute New Mexico Military Institute Georgia Military College Getting Into Military Junior Colleges Military Junior Colleges require you to submit an application, your high school transcript, and some require SAT/ACT scores. Even those schools that don’t require standardized test scores may use them for placement purposes. If you want to enter an Early Commissioning Program, there are minimum GPA and SAT/ACT requirements that vary by school. If you have a 2.5 GPA and a 920 SAT score or a 19 ACT score, you’ll meet the minimum requirements for all of the programs. Additionally, for an ECP, you need to pass a medical exam, the Army Physical Fitness Test, and you must complete military training after high school. You can do Cadet Initial Entry Training in the summer after high school before enrolling in the ECP. Cost The costs of Military Junior Colleges vary. At Wentworth Military Academy, a private college, the full cost of attendance is over $32,000 annually. However, there are scholarships and grants available. For example, if you receive a Military Junior College Scholarship, you’ll have full tuition and fees paid, and you’ll receive money for books, your uniform, and a monthly stipend. Additionally, Wentworth will cover room and board costs. New Mexico Military Institute, a state-funded college, costs about $20,000 for in-state students. Again, there are numerous scholarship opportunities and you can apply for financial aid. Is a Military College Right for You? There are a number of factors to consider before you commit to attending a military college as opposed to going to a regular college. Most importantly, how motivated are you to get military training and serve in the military? If you're not fully enthusiastic about serving, you should think twice before deciding to attend a school that requires you to spend years serving in the military after you graduate. Also, can you handle the incredibly structured and disciplined environment of military colleges? Do you need more free time and a laid back environment, or are you excited by the thought of getting pushed physically and academically? Do you want to feel the unique camaraderie you'll experience with fellow cadets? Personally, I briefly considered attending West Point. I was recruited by Army for gymnastics, and when the coach called me and sold the academy to me, I was intrigued. The financial and potential professional benefits of going to Army sounded great. However, I hadn't ever considered joining the military previously and I was hesitant to commit to the five years after graduating. Also, I didn't think I would thrive in such a strict environment; I wanted more freedom to pursue my varied interests. How to Choose Which Type of College Is Right for You If you’re interested in military training and getting a college education, you have a number of choices. On top of the service academies, Senior Military Colleges, and Military Junior Colleges, you can join an ROTC at another college or join a cadet program at some maritime colleges. There are a number of factors to consider when deciding which type of school you want to attend: How committed are you to pursuing a career in the military? If you're completely sure that you want to serve in the military after college, then the service academies may be a good option for you. If you're interested in military training but haven't fully committed to a military career, then perhaps a Senior Military College would be better for you. Do you want to be around civilian students or immerse yourself in a military environment with other cadets? If you want the balance of feeling like a normal college student and get military training, then joining an ROTC program at a traditional college is probably your best option. If you want to be in an environment that is completely dedicated to preparing you to serve as a military officer and share that experience with your peers, then you may want to attend a service academy. If you mostly want the military training experience but still want some exposure to regular college students, then maybe you should consider one of the SMCs that has non-cadet students. If you want a cadet experience and a regular college experience, you can go to a Military Junior College and then transfer to a 4-year college. Are you a competitive applicant? It's very difficult to get into the service academies. If you don't have excellent grades and test scores, you may not be able to secure a nomination or get into one of the academies. If you're not close to the average GPA or test scores for the academies, you may want to consider one of the less selective SMCs. Another option is to go to a Military Junior College, where you can join an Early Commissioning Program, or you can do a Service Academy Preparation Program if you're determined to go to a service academy. How do finances affect your decision? Hopefully, finances won't play too much of a role in your decision, but money is almost always a factor. Without grants or scholarships, the service academies offer the best financial deal by far. However, with financial aid, you may be able to get a comparable situation at a Senior Military College or a Junior Military College. How to Select a College On top of the type of school you decide to attend, it's important to select the specific college that's the best fit for you. Learn how to choose a college. Also, make sure you do ample college research before you apply. Some factors to consider as you’re doing your research are the location, undergraduate enrollment, selectivity, academic programs, and on-campus culture of the schools. You can use college websites, finders, guidebooks, ranking lists, and search websites to help with your research. Additionally, you may want to consult with counselors, teachers, current students, and alumni to help you with your college decision. What's Next? As you're navigating your way through the college selection process, learn how much it matters where you go to college. Also, you need to figure out where in the US you should go to college. Data Collection and Analysis With a Real Teacher-Researcher Essay - 1

Data Collection and Analysis With a Real Teacher-Researcher - Essay Example The fourth observation was that, moving students’ seats helps reduce the number of redirections. The data shows a trend of reduced redirections; this is probably due to implementation of the steps suggested by Sienna from her observations. Increasing eye contact between the students and Ms. Steward, giving the students something to anticipate, and moving the students’ seats were some of the solutions to keeping them in check. Eye contact from Ms. Steward helped keep the students aware that someone is watching over them. Giving the students something to look forward to boosts their moods and keeps them in check as they wait. Moving students seats helps separate those who have become close to each other to avoid increased talks in between them. May’s graph was a student over time graph indicating a period of nine days. Referred to as the â€Å"five minute challenge,† It indicates the number of students that entered the class from lunch, sat down, copied their agenda into their notebooks, and were ready to learn in in 5 minutes or less. The number of students who could finish their tasks increased gradually from 11 on the first day to a maximum of 20 on the 8th day. This was probably due the task the students had to complete prior to the start of the class. The tasks helped to keep them on check. Based on the students’ response to the agenda timed challenge, May should create more tasks for them to complete in a short time every day. This will certainly keep them focused in class and avoid redirections at the start of the class (Hodge, 2010, pg.106). Anthony and Leah’s data indicates the time taken to complete four goals every day. The four goals were to write their complete agenda, answer the bell work question, put the pencil down, and then put their hand up to be checked. They recorded the time used to complete these goals for nine

Business Plan based on a case study of a leisure centre Essay

Business Plan based on a case study of a leisure centre - Essay Example In order sort out issues better, one of the major problems would be identified for every segment, the aspects that need to be addressed in such problem would be discussed, then the process of implementing the action plan would be stated and the way it would assist the leisure club would also be clarified. Sales, Marketing and Customer Service In this segment focus would be on the marketing, sales and customer service segment of the fitness and leisure club. As the customer survey report indicate, the customers seem to be quite satisfied with the services being offered in the club, but the yearly statistics for marketing or customer service reveal a different picture, and sales is totally depended on these two aspect. The sports hall is closed for two month as the roof is leaky, poor food safety standards, etc. These are maintenance drawbacks, which reveal that the council and employees of the centre are not marketing their services well to the customers. In such case immediate refurb ishment of the centres are required. If the quality of facilities and amenities offered to the customers are improved and provided in a systematic manner, through right planning and restoration, then this condition will improve. Sales will automatically increase when the centres are renovated and re-launched along with all the facilities that would also include a technology based framework for performance, and sales assessment and monitoring (Lewis, 2007). As far as the record of customer service goes for these centres, it is even poor because the female members are not safe; there are no female lifeguards, and many more. The assistant manager is being accused of sexually harassing the female staff, which reveals that when the environment of the organisation and the standard of customer service can be expected from the incidents mentioned. The quality of customer service and safety of members especially female and children is necessary (Jeffs, 2008). The action plan for marketing an d customer service would be discussed in steps to provide a clear view of what needs to be done: The first step would be to list all the refurbishment work that needs to be done for the centres. The second step should be to estimate the refurbishment cost, and assess the sources through which funds would be derived for refurbishment. The third step should be to develop strategies to offer all those facilities appropriately to the customers, for which Fridley Leisure Centre is known for. The fourth step to arrange for financial assistance from the assumed sources. The fifth step would be to re-launch the centres, invite members, and ensure them of good environment, facilities, and safety (Griffin, 2012). The final step would be to stay focused towards the safety and specific requirement of female members and children. This is a way of extensive marketing through which revenue will increase aggressively. The club membership once became stagnant, will start increasing again. Goodwill w ill increase for improved customer service, and increasing level of safety. It will also assist in receiving grants from government for further financial assistance and improvements (Brassington, and Pettitt, 2007). Human Resources or Staff Management This discussion would be based on another most significant area of the organisati

Henry Lee Lucas Essay Example for Free

Henry Lee Lucas Essay Henry Lee Lucas On July 11th 1983, a drifter named Henry Lee Lucas was arrested for illegal possession of a fire arm by a felon. Lucas was not at all happy about being locked up, because they were supposedly depriving him of cigarettes and coffee. After being locked up for 4 days, he admitted to one of the jailers that he had â€Å"done some bad things†. He told that he had killed for the last 10 years. He was already a suspect in 2 murders, and the offices were sure that they would soon have enough information to close these 2 cases. Lucas admitted that he had killed Kate Rich and Becky Powell. While in court for these murders, he admitted that he’d had sex with the body, cut it into pieces and burned it in a wood stove. He also said that he had killed at least a hundred more. Police started questioning Lucas about other unsolved murders all over the country. He would admit to them and tell them some details about the crime that would link him to it. Over a period of time, he started offering more information about murders that he had not even been questioned about. He said that he usually picked up hitchhikers then he would quickly kill them and have sex with the body because he preferred sexual contact with a corpse. He generally used a knife or strangulation, but said that he liked to try different methods so that he didn’t leave a pattern for the police to follow. Lucas also later confessed to killing his mother. He said that she was an alcoholic and was mean to him. Some claims say that she supported the family by bootlegging and prostitution. Lucas claimed that his mother made him watch her entertain her clients. He claims that after walking out of the room one time because he was disgusted with her actions, she found him and hit him in the head with a wooden board. He said that after that, he had dizzy spells and headaches. On January 11, 1960, Lucas and his mother got into an argument and Lucas grabbed a knife and plunged it into her neck. He was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 20 years. He served 10. Another claim that he made was that of one of his mother’s clients. He said that this man turned him on to bestiality by showing him how to have sex with the corpse of a dog or sheep. He said that he first killed someone just before he turned 15. He said that the reason was so that he could see what it felt like to have sex with a human. Lucas had a traveling companion/lover named Odis Toole. Toole supposedly assisted Lucas in these heinous crimes. Toole’s niece, Becky Powell, began to travel with them. Lucas began to fall in love with her. He decided to take Becky for himself, so he and Becky left Toole and went to TX. Toole was not happy about them leaving. He had lost his longtime lover and his niece. He supposedly killed several people over a 6 month period of time. He also confessed to kidnapping and killing a small boy named, Adam Walsh. Adam’s father was inspired after the killing of his son, to start the popular show, America’s Most Wanted. After living in TX for a while, Becky wanted to come home. Lucas resisted, but later told her to gather her things. They began to hitchhike. He continued trying to get her to change her mind. She did not. At one point, they got into an argument and she slapped him. He took his knife and stabbed her in the heart. He drug her off over and embankment and had sex with her corpse. He cut her up into 9 pieces and spread them over a field. He later returned and gathered the pieces and buried them under a tree. He then returned to where they were living in TX, and to a lady named Kate Rich. He wanted to kill again. He asked Kate if she wanted to help him look for Becky (knowing that she was dead). She agreed and went with him. He drove to the end of a dirt road and stabbed Kate in the side, puncturing her heart. He was immediately aroused. He dragged her from the car and had sex with her body. He cut her up, also, and took her back to where they were living in TX and put her in a stove to burn her remains. After much investigation, and examination of the times and places that some of the murders took place that Lucas had admitted to , police began to question whether or not he was telling the truth. They later figured out that he was lying about several of the instances, because some of them were even committed when he was locked up for other crimes that he had committed. It was also found that he was known to be in a different place when he claimed to have killed in another state many miles away. Lucas claimed to have committed over 360 murders. It was eventually claimed that the police were so interested in closing some of their open murder cases that they would show Lucas the case files to â€Å"refresh his memory†. He in turn used it to his benefit by tying himself to the murders by telling evidence that was never released to the public. The police actually cleared around 213 cases through Lucas’ confessions. He was convicted of only 11 homicides; although some criminologist say that he was responsible for between 40-50 murders. In 1998, Gov. George W. Bush of TX commuted the death penalty that Lucas was handed, to a sentence of life.

Education is the Foundation of Opportunity :: Philosophy College Admissions

Education is the Foundation of Opportunity â€Å"Where there is an open mind, there will always be a frontier.† - Charles F. Kettering(inventor of the electric starter, 1876-1958) I want to go into education with an open mind. Education is the foundation of opportunity, and I want to give young people all the opportunities I’ve had. It is because of these opportunities that I feel that I was called to the field of education. Every person who has ever been in school knows that there are teachers we will remember and teachers we will forget. We think of all the effective teachers we’ve had over the years with a sense of recognition, but the ones that have touched our humanity we remember with a deep sense of gratitude. We will remember some teachers because of what they taught us, some we will remember because of why they taught us. Students in my class may not leave with a complete grasp and understanding on linking verbs or calculus, but they will gain a little bit more knowledge about life. I want my classroom to be very organized. I want my rules, procedures, and consequences to be very clear to the students. I want them to know what they are and why I made them. I believe that organization is a key factor in a teacher’s success. Show me a teacher who isn’t organized, even in their own way, and I will show you an ineffective teacher. I also want my classroom to be neat in appearance. I want the seating arrangement to be set up to where students will have no problem walking around. I also what the decorations on the wall to be neat. I want them to represent something important and not just be there for show. I now want to tell you about some of my personal goals I would like to accomplish. First of all, I would like to try a harder to enhance myself in becoming a morally ethical person. When I become a teacher, I want to be nothing less then a well-developed positive influence on my students and fellow staff because the best way to lead is to lead by example. A lot of times a teacher is the only positive influence a child will have in their lives.

My Belief Story

Family I believe your friends can sometimes be more of a family then your actual family. It's all because they choose to stand by your side. Your family is forced to. I can remember this one time I was wondering my neighborhood thinking about my dad and my great aunt. My dad passed away when I was only 7 months old, my great aunt when I was in 4th grade. I remember thinking about what we would be doing and whether or not we would still be together or not.As I am walking around and thinking y friend that I have known for 10 years bumps into me. We hung out all of the time. Whether we were just sitting around each other houses or hanging out at a park but we spent most of our time on the bike path. He name is Kenny. As Kenny bumped Into me he saw the tears, that I had yet to notice myself, he stopped me. He had turned me around and gave me the biggest hug ever. After I felt his arms incased me I fell into a world of tears. Surrounded by sadness and despair, tears raining down upon my h eart and washing away all hopes of happiness. The waterworks had finally gun at that point, finally someone would actually listen to me. He had given everything I needed, he made me feel better. It was right around the time I was slowing down my waterworks when Kenny had asked me what was wrong. In the middle of my explanation of how I felt like my dad and great aunt hated me for who I was turning into, all he did was start hugging me again, I couldn't help but start crying again. After our little talk we became substantially closer. Now we can talk about anything. On another occasion my best friend Bella, who I had known for about a year, has eloped me deal work out some of my inner conflicts_We have gotten closer lately Close enough to be able to completely understand each other and now we can talk to each other about anything. Like this one time one of my sisters was talking about how there are so many problems that are going on at my old house. She was basically unloading all of h er stress onto me. She was talking about how they have like no food and how no one wants to get a Job, so they are barely getting by on their monthly bills. Then out of nowhere she starts asking me for money and I didn't want to sound eke a jerk and say no without a reason, even though I had the best reason in the world, I am too young to support her and I shouldn't have to even think about that. So Instead all I said was â€Å"Jess how much do you need? † and then I asked her â€Å"why are you coming to me for money? We aren't here to support you. The reason we don't live there anymore is because me and Liz had to endure the stress of not knowing whether or not the bills are going to be paid or not†. When she left I knew she was passed off but I was only speaking the truth. My friend Bella showed up but by then I had already gotten up from where I was sitting and was running in the direction of follow me. When she came into my room I turned away and immediately started pushing the tears away, I was determined not to let her get even a glimpse of me crying. I don't like crying in front of anyone. She came next to me and we started talking about it. â€Å"l can't take their stress anymore, it's Just too much for me to deal with, it was different when I was living there because I was forced to deal with it but owe I don't have to deal with it yet they come over and Just give me their problems.I mean what the hell is wrong with them, I am too young to be dealing with stress that a twenty year old would have to deal with. I am so done†. As we are talking I turned away to cry, I couldn't do it anymore. I was giving up. I started to think about everything that we have talked about and how much we have helped each other out with anything. That's what family is all about but when you have a family like mine, with the exception of my two sisters Amanda and Liz, that don't seem to care about nee another and are always at each other's throats trying to kill each other you don't get the Joy of what true family is like.If everyone had friends that were close enough to be family, if not more then everyone would be happier to know that they have someone that wasn't in their family that they can count on. In all honesty there are going to be a lot of people that you know but only of those people are going to be you friends, people who wont play around with your friendship, people who will always stick closer to you then your closest family member.

Christopher Columbus: Hero or Zero

Christopher Columbus: Hero or Zero? In October we celebrate the man who found America. People are taught at a young age that Christopher Columbus was a hero when in fact he was a murderer. Yes, he found a land that was unknown to his people, but in his findings, he murdered, raped and enslaved the true natives of this country. Columbus and his men destroyed the civilizations, cultures, and land of the Native Americans. These actions should not be portrayed as heroic. When you read about his thoughts and actions during his voyages, you can see that Columbus was not civil towards the natives he encountered. When he first sighted what he called â€Å"Indians† he saw a group of unclothed people, their nakedness, to him, represented lack of culture and religion. To Columbus, this was an opportunity to spread the word of God and exploit the Native Americans. He thought they would be easy to defeat because of their apparent defenseless and a source of profit because the Native America ns could easily be enslaved. It clearly did not occur to Columbus to consider these people anything but slaves. His thoughts were only a fraction as to what was to come.In Columbus’s letters you can sense his arrogant attitude in claiming the lands he found. He wrote a letter telling of his discovery to his friend Luis de Santangel, in this letter he wrote, â€Å"And there I found very many islands filled with people innumerable and of them all I have taken possession for their Highnesses†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Columbus never considered the fact that these islands, and their inhabitants, were not his to take and change as he pleased. Columbus informed Spain of his new discovery when returned. He brought with him many new things, as well as kidnapped Indians to pay tribute to Spain and lionize himself. Any Indians that were not taken to Spain were made slaves on the islands. The settlers that came to the islands with Columbus were allowed to select any Indian they wanted for a slave. E nslavement was inevitable and no one seemed bothered by the mistreatment of the Native Americans. Columbus and his people deemed themselves as superior to them. Enslavement was not the only thing the Native Americans had to endure; Columbus also threatened and intimidated them and even tortured and killed them.Columbus felt Christians did no wrong so they never got punished for their inhumane actions towards Indians and he was in charge so he felt he could do as he pleased without consequence. Many people terrorized the Indians and instead of Columbus punishing the culprit he punished the Indian victims. Instances like that led to a war between Columbus and the settlers, and the Indians. Indians did not have the weapons necessary to defeat the settlers and were wiped out; those that were not killed were captured. Accounts of rape that Columbus and his men committed were reported by people who he traveled with.Columbus would pass captured native women out to his men so therefore they believed they did not need the women’s consent and as horrible as this seems, those were the less violent acts towards the Indians. Columbus and the settlers were very cruel. They would make examples out of Indians by doing things like cutting their hands off and telling them to share the message and they would slaughter entire villages including children. These are the acts that Columbus and his men partook in. Christopher Columbus should never have been nor should be considered a hero.He destroyed what he discovered, wiped out an entire population and never finished his goal of finding a route to Asia. How is that heroic?Works Cited â€Å"Marvelous possessions: the wonder of the New World† By Stephen Greenblatt ^quote on page 2 found on page 52^ â€Å"A short account of the destruction of the Indies† By Bartolome de las Casas Columbus: Letter to Louis De Santangel, 1493 http://www. wwnorton. com/college/history/ralph/workbook/ralprs19. htm â€Å"The mysterio us history of Columbus: an exploration of the man, the myth, the legacy† By John Noble Wilford

How to be an effective leader Essay Example

How to be an effective leader Essay Example How to be an effective leader Essay How to be an effective leader Essay This final assignment we decided to make out in interview format, giving our opinions, asking our friends, family members opinions, so that efferent aspects of topic  «How to be an effective leader?  » were covered. Using of this format is the best way to show the knowledge we gained and points of view we formed during the course. Alexandra, 20, B student from Russia: World history teaches people a lot, and is being a rich source of good examples and crucial mistakes. History shows us a lot of different instances of successful leaders and less successful ones. Lets take a look at Germany, 1930-ass. Seemed like country was united by strong leader, whose doctrine was accepted by the most of Germans as successful amongst all over the country and was seen as ultimate leader. He was expected to movie things. But with this case we can see, how strong leader with wrong ideas, beliefs and strategies may cause a huge harm and destroy everything, he is responsible for. This example might seem a bit shocking, but it is still relevant. An effective leader should clearly see, what his company needs, how and by what means to improve existing situation, and predict possible outcomes of his actions. Not to go far from history, I always recall my history teacher as one of the best leaders Ive ever met. She was pretty strict when it came to homework, tests and assignments, but at the same time she was able to make students feel comfortable with her. Being responsive, understanding and choosing informal ways of teaching, but at the same time having strong opinions made her an effective leader. It was my pleasure to visit all of her lecture, participate in discussions and to be led by her. Denis, 20, B student from Russia: A candle loses nothing of its flame when lit another candle. It is always funny to see when on the workplace during heavy discussions and hard working in one room, in other room sits director and from time to time Just checks owe the work goes. Its K if company is big and chief really doesnt need to delve in every detail. But unfortunately such a situation can occur in small offices either. So what is the role of leader? I think he should be along with all but on one step forward. This means that he should be not only a supervisor, but the most active player of the team; moreover, leader should show an example with his own working appearance! Many companies introduce nice suggestions for offices equip: they eliminate walls or replace them with glass ones to give everybody an opportunity to see how boss works. This is kind of motivation and demonstration of openness: We dont have any barriers! We are one team! Wed better be realistic, we wont ruin anything better think of what more can be done. Its clever to spend much time with collective, speaking to them, giving advices (not too much and without pointing at mistakes! ). It is important to understand either what is happening in employees work life or how is his emotional condition: what problem does he have, how is his family, children. Knowledge of peoples hobbies, views and interests will result in better communication, working conditions and anally in improved performance. Just dont cross the line between party and informal working relations. Everybody is happy to receive leaders attention! Leaders role is to be a mentor, supportive advisor or even a coach. Help people to achieve their dreams and aims. If possible, delegate responsibilities taking in account their interests and abilities. When employees work with pleasure, result is better! Pay respect to people you work with, help them and remember: Every member in a Pale, 19, B student from Russia: On one of our Management and Leadership lectures we had a role playing exercise, hen were separated into groups, and I was one of the captains. My question was: What shall be a good leader or manager like?. Now, after the discussions with all the groups, I came up with this: A perfect leader is not only a good manager, who knows how to make things work. He or she shall be an inspiring example of the best attitude and in the same time might not lose control over the processes he or she is in charge of. After, the lesson, I have mentioned before, I understood that the task of seeking the best leadership skills is by all means connected with the ways of making an organization the most successful. On the basis of this, I came up with a solution that the only way of allocating the most important managerial skills is analysis of best Organizational patterns. The task had become much easier, after I understood what shall be the starting point. My mistake on the lesson was that I tried to make a list of all the interpersonal skills, but the key was hidden in the right order, not in the amount. The priority of the qualities should be based on what an organization require the most. This picture in my opinion shows one of the most comprehensive organizational models. All leaders perform in order to build and strengthen their organizations. Maddened, 20, B student from Russia: A leader should be a good example for his team because in my opinion the teams success is dependent on an effective leader. He/ She should not Just be confident overall, but also confident about his/her decision. A leader has to give correct orders to the team members. Managing people in the right way is a leaders most important job. A leader should build trust amongst his/her team members so that they consider him/her to be reliable. An effective leader should be friendly with his team and at the same time know where to draw the line regarding discipline of the team. Davit, 24, Mechanical Engineering, India: An effective leader should be diplomatic and should heed to the opinions of his team. He/she should not make promises he cannot keep and be realistic in his approach. He/she should look at encouraging good work and practices through incentives. He should recognize good work and reward/compliment good accomplishments. A good leader is proactive and offers good guidance to his team members. He/she should lead by example and prove to his team that what is Czech Republic: A good leader maintains team moral by giving them appropriate amount of work. Too such work can make them tired and unproductive and too less work can cause them to be lazy. He should also give them appropriate break times during the work hours as well as vacations, maternity, casual and other leave. This will help the team persons to not loose motivation to do work. An effective leader handles his/her team in such a way that they want to wake up and come to work and are excited by the prospect of doing work for him/her. Anna, 19, B student, Russia: Some people are born to be leaders, others dont. But to improve these qualities and to become the best leader person should practice a lot. First of all leader should be confident and sure about everything what he is doing. Also leader should have such qualities like patience, because when team is Just created it needs more control than ever. And its very hard to make people do what you want them to do. So he should be well organized and have an opportunity and power to organize other people. And what is more important-to do it in right way. Second thing is vision of future and being able to predict some things. Not every member of the team can see amazing opportunities, and to find ways to get this chases. To be a leader means to make everything as fast as possible, faster than others. Thus, sharp feeling of time management, is very important. Good team leader should know the approach to each member of a team. Some people need more hard control, others can be Just asked and they do everything. He should not threaten anyone, and at the same time have to be strong. But there is important thing that despite these facts he should keep the similar attitude to every person, dont show that some people he likes and others dont. Also all members of teams are oriented on team leader, so he has to keep the brand, to show positive example, to be good example to follow. He should be very polite, careful, and tidy. And Im saying this because I think that appearance plays a big role in companies and team success. Elizabeth, 19, B student, Russia: To my mind, the term effective leader can be applied to any manager who: is responsible for his actions, for his crew or company, for his duties and tasks completion; complies time management and works according to ethics rules; is able to get needed result within a certain period of time; is able to analyze the result and take actions upon it; is able to admit mistakes and take actions over them; is able to apply innovations in his work; is able to develop him or herself and lead to his crew improvement and development. Yang, 22, designer, Russia: Being charismatic makes you an effective leader, because people are attracted you. Effective leader always makes the most adequate and consensus decision. Probably, he/she also has to have some cool gadget no one else has. With this independent article we tried to collect all our mutual findings and thoughts about concept of Leadership. During live-mode discussions we covered such an leadership styles, findings which we learnt during workshops, and finally, features of n effective leader. It was interesting to listen and to compare points of view of us and our friends from different countries , of different ages and from different departments. The process of work we found very playful and entertaining. Freestyle assignments are always a field for a fantasy and expression. Important thing is that we didnt base on any other article, neither used any sources. It is much more interesting to share own thoughts. Hopefully, You enjoyed reading our work! A. Phonographs , A. The Solution to Factory Farming

The Solution to Factory Farming The cruelty of factory farming is well-documented, but what is the solution? Go vegan. Cant we continue eating meat and other animal products and just treat the animals humanely? No, for two reasons: According to Animal Equality  over fifty-six  billion land animals are killed for human consumption every year worldwide. This number doesnt include sea creatures.   Humans eat far too many animals and animal products for the animals to all live on idyllic rambling farms, making humane farming almost impossible to achieve. A single battery hen building can hold over 100,000 hens in cages stacked on top of each other. How many square miles of land would be required to humanely raise 100,000 chickens so that they can establish separate flocks with their own pecking orders? Now multiply that number by 3,000, because there are 300 million egg-laying hens in the US, approximately one per person. And thats just the egg-laying chickens. Most importantly, no matter how well the animals are treated, subjugating animals for meat, milk and egg production is antithetical to animal rights.    Shouldnt we reduce suffering where we can? Yes, we can reduce some suffering by eliminating certain practices in certain areas, but this will not solve the problem. As explained above, we cannot humanely raise nine billion animals. Going vegan is the only solution. Also, keep in mind that some meat, eggs and dairy products are misleadingly marketed as humane but offer only marginal improvements over traditional factory farming. These animals are not raised humanely if they are in larger cages, or are taken out of cages only to live in overcrowded barns. And humane slaughter is an oxymoron. What about recent strides in the industry to reduce animal suffering? In his new book The Humane Economy, Animal Protection 2.0, How Innovators and enlightened consumers are transforming the Lives of Animals, author and animal-rights leader Wayne Pacelle writes about how the demand for change in how the animal farming community does business is having very identifiable changes. People who learn about factory farming are becoming more enlightened, and as they do so, producers must meet their demands. We saw this happen with the veal industry. Pacelle writes: From 1944 to the late 1980s, American per capita consumption of veal dropped from 8.6 pounds to just 0.3 pounds. When people learned about the cruelty of the veal business, they knew the moral price they paid was higher than the actual price of that restaurant meal. When we know better, we do better. In May 2015, the Humane Society of the United States was in negotiations with Walmart, the worlds largest retailer of food, to stop buying their eggs and chickens from farmers who would not voluntarily lose the battery cages. Those producers who did remove the batter cages were the new suppliers, so others had to go on board or be put out of business. This caused Walmart to release a declaration stating: There is growing public interest in how food is produced and consumers have questions about whether current practices match their values and expectations about the well-being of farm animals. Animal science plays a central role in guiding these practices , but does not always provide clear direction. Increasingly, animal welfare decisions are being considered through a combination of science and ethics. This may sound encouraging, but not all applaud the HSUSs efforts to make animals raised for slaughter more comfortable while awaiting their fate. One reason is as mentioned above:  no matter how well the animals are treated, subjugating animals for meat, milk and egg production is antithetical to animal rights. The other reason is if we make factory farming to appear humane, less people will feel the need to explore vegan options. Their moral and ethical reasons for doing so are seemingly moot. Cant I just go vegetarian? Going vegetarian is a great step, but consuming eggs and dairy still causes the suffering and deaths of animals, even on small family farms where the animals roam freely. When egg-laying hens or dairy cows are too old to be profitable, they are slaughtered for their meat, which is generally considered low quality and used for processed meat products. Male layer chickens are considered worthless because they do not lay eggs and do not have enough muscle to be useful as meat chickens, so they are killed as infants. While still alive, male chicks are ground up for animal feed or fertilizer. Male diary cattle are also considered useless because they do not give milk, and are slaughtered for veal while still very young. Going vegan is the only solution.

Events Management Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Events Management Law - Essay Example ........................10 Reference.............................................,11 Executive Summary The Cliffhanger Festival is an annual event that includes games and other outdoor events. The primary organiser of the event, Heason Events has some legal obligations that must be attained for a successful event to be organised. The main legal requirements are health and safety matters and licensing. The legal requirement for health and safety is rooted in the concept of negligence and the duty of care for the organisation of public events like this festival. This duty of care is supported by common law and civil law in the UK as well as European Union Laws. It puts the organisers in a position where they need to identify their duty to the participants in terms of health and safety and also put in place measures to ensure that this is honoured. The licenses required are spelt out in the Licensing Act of 2003. The necessary licenses required by Heason Events include licences to use p remises, to sell alcohol, copyright permissions for music as well as trademark permission. It is recommended that Heason Events puts in place a good risk management team that will analyse the health and safety risks involved at each stage of the event. They should set up a first aid centre and insure those that cannot be handled. Participants should be given conspicuous notices on health and safety tips. The team should monitor risks regularly. Also, Heason must put in place practical steps to ensure that all partners and exhibitors have complied with all necessary licensing requirements. This should be monitored before and during the event to prevent abuses. Introduction This paper examines the legal matters relevant to the organisation of Cliffhanger 2011, the UK’s largest outdoor event that is expected to draw about 20,000 visitors to Sheffield this year (Cliffhanger Official Website).
